School Vision
At St Joseph’s Primary, we are a supportive and inclusive Catholic parish school enabling all students to achieve the fullness of life (Jn:10:10).
Working collaboratively, we provide a quality education for students through meaningful, innovative learning and faith-filled experiences. We embrace parent engagement and pride ourselves in building strong family and community partnerships.
Dear Parents
Today, Friday 28 October 2022, we celebrate and acknowledge our teachers and ancillary staff for their hard work and dedication they show to support your children.
I remember why I became a teacher many years ago. It was because I had great teachers who taught me well, celebrated my achievements and had fun along the way. It was my experience from these good and selfless people that encouraged my love of learning and the act of helping others. One teacher who made a very important and profound impact on me while I was growing up, was my Year 6 teacher - Mr Watson.
The way Mr Watson engaged us all in the learning was wonderful, he taught us our times tables the old fashioned way, rewarding us for the times tables we remembered with smelly stickers and "Minties", he had electronic buzzers in the room and we would compete in spelling bees and quizzes, like the days of the television show 'Sale of the Century'. He even had us trained for the Beep Test a difficult stop/start sprint and we battled him every lunchtime in a game of downball, in which he never lost a game.
I hold very special memories of this teacher, that when he became a Principal of a school, I deliberately chose one of my teaching rounds at that school to learn more from him and from his teaching staff. I wanted to be exactly like Mr Watson. I guess, I wanted to know more of what makes a good teacher and what do good teachers do...infact, I discovered that good teachers are really, just good people.
Our teachers and staff at St Joseph's School are good people, they do good things for your children. They often go above and beyond what is asked of them in their roles as teachers and they do this because they not only love their job but they love our children. It really is because they are more than teachers, they are people of God who want to do good.
I am immensely proud of the team here at St Joseph’s School and ask that you extend your appreciation, (in due course) to your child’s teacher or support person during the weeks ahead and not only recognise World Teachers Day, but recognise them as good people.
Peace be with you
Brendan Kiely
Youth Mass - Sunday 30 October 2022 at 9:00am
We wish to invite everyone to our Parish Youth Mass this Sunday 30 October 2022, at 9:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Wauchope. This is another opportunity for our parents to gather following Mass and enjoy each others company with a cuppa and meet new and familiar faces. The school community would love to see you at the Youth Mass.
Commerative Trees - Queen Elizabeth II
Earlier this year our school applied for a grant to plant trees to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. I am pleased to announce that we were successful and in a few weeks time a new line of trees will be planted with some landscaping. Hopefully this will help to provide a leafy outlook for the school and create a place to mediate and reflect. At the conclusion of the planting, we will hold a Commemorative event.
Baby News
Welcome to baby Archie, only days ago. He is a handsome little brother for Ruby, S3C and Ellie, in S1M. Archie is lucky to have three older sisters to love and help Mum with his care.
Band
The Band instructors have been busy testing our children for suitable instruments.
If your child has a Band permission slip to return, please return the completed note to the Office prior to Thursday 3 November 2022.
Band is an optional activity at our school.
All Saints Day
As a school, we will celebrate All Saints' Day on Tuesday, November 1, 2022, with a Whole School Mass at 9:30 am. All Saints' Day is a Catholic celebration that occurs annually. The event gives believers the opportunity to commemorate all saints and martyrs, both acknowledged and unknown, throughout the religion's history. All families are welcome to attend this mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
More than just a Trip to the Zoo!
This term, Kindergarten is learning to write factual texts about different types of animals. What better place to enhance the students' learning than a trip to the zoo!
Last week, Kinder staff and students went to Billabong Zoo and met many animals, including: Shrek the crocodile, koalas and even some friendly wallabies which they hand fed.
Authentic, learning contexts, such as going to the zoo, have more meaning for students which increases their engagement, the quality of writing as well as their self-confidence as 'writers'. This week, the students have been transferring these wonderful zoo experiences into their writing and what amazing writing they have produced as a result.
Read through some of these fantastic draft pieces of factual paragraphs about KOALAS and enjoy the artwork and photos of Kindergarten's adventures at the zoo.

Principal 3R Award Recipients - Term 4, Week 3
Early Stage 1: Zac Brown & Henry Hayes
Stage 1: Drew Arnett, Hudson Marchment & Lailah Davis
Stage 2: Jessica Dennes, Hudson Cook & Ella Hardes
Stage 3: Jake Mann, Skylah Simmich-Peterson & Amaya Hayden
This term the Catholic Education Office Diocese of Lismore has allocated teachers an extra Staff Development Day. The reasoning for this allocation is to do with the major staff shortages and illness during Term 3, resulting from an increase in COVID19 cases, colds and influenza. The decision to provide this extra day was taken to ensure teachers have the time to focus on their teaching priorities with the new Curriculum/ Syllabus which comes into effect in 2023.
Please place this date in your diaries.
Camp Australia - Before and After School care will be operating on this day.
Your understanding is much appreciated.

St Vincent De Paul visit
The Mini Vinnies team is achieving big things in Term 4. Last week, Mini Vinnies' students met with representatives from St Vincent De Paul, Kerrie and Des. They told the students about how the community is supported by St Vincent De Paul and spoke to students about what they do at school to support the St Vincent de Paul Society and promote awareness. The students presented $600 from the Winter Appeal fundraising effort.

Socktober
On Wednesday 26 October 2022 The Mini Vinnies ran Socktober. Socktober is in support of Catholic Mission raising money to help the children in need in Ethiopia. Students wore fun, colourful and crazy socks, and enjoyed a sausage sizzle. They participated in a classroom Liturgy focusing on Socktober and 'The Why' behind what we do.
During Lunch 2, Mini Vinnies' students ran activities for the school including a disco, soccer shootout, design a sock and sock target throw.
A total of $253 will be forwarded to Caritas Australia in the near future.

Christmas Hampers will begin soon with more information to come. A big thank you to the St Joseph's Wauchope community for your support, the Mini Vinnies team couldn't do it without you!
Basketball
Stage 2 and Stage 3 commenced basketball this Term. They have wonderful coaches to improve their skills and are having loads of fun.

Keira - Participated at ISHE in Tamworth
Keira represented St Joseph's School at Inter-School Horse Extravaganza.
Keira's account of her time:
"Two weeks ago, Thursday 8 October, I went horse riding in Tamworth. I was able to represent the school in horse riding events such as dressage, jumping and hunter. I had a lot of fun with my cousin and my horse, Cleo. On the first day, after getting settled, I went for a ride. My cousin and I also had time to go shopping and we even got ice-cream. It was delicious. Things didn't quite go to plan and my horse and I only paticipated in dressage. I may not have won anything, but it was a great experience.
Keira"
Chaplaincy
During Chaplaincy, a group of children refurbished an old hammer. The hammer has been in our school tool box for many years.
At first the group watched the following video, to gather ideas:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Xh-rDs7st0&authuser=0
The leather handle was removed, the hammer sanded and cleaned.
Then the dilemma of sourcing suitable leather came to light. The local leather company, Harold Vickery and Sons, was contacted. The Director, Matthew Hyde very kindly donated some leather for the hammer repairs. He was excited about the project and supporting the children.
The leather was in turn cut, punched and pressed onto the handle. The handle was shaped and sanded before final completion.
The children completed the task while participating in many supporting conversations.
The end result being a masterpiece - new hammer.

Year 5 - Student Discipleship Exuro
"Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but be an example for the believers in your speech, your conduct, your love, faith and purity" 1 Timothy 4:12
Lukas Everson, Nicholas Riley, Piper Burgess, Indigo Manwarring, Leila McDonnell, Kaitlyn O'Malley, Emily Saunders and Taylor Saville were selected to attend Exuro last Tuesday in Port Macquarie. This was an opportunity to learn and practice the skills of being a disciple of Jesus today and understand the challenges that this can present.
Our wonderful leaders from Year 5 were mentored by Year 10 students from Regional, two energetic Youth Ministry Officers and Rachel from the Catholic School's Office.
Our students will now have the opportunity to lead their peers through activities at school to pass on their knowledge of being a disciple of Jesus and following the message of God's Word each and every day.

Chase and Levi participated in the Junior Handling competitions at the recent Comboyne Show.
Chase won the Junior Handler 7 - 10 year old
Levi won the Junior Handler 6 years and under
Congratulations!

Thank you!
A HUGE thank you to Ali, Nikki and Haley for being our super star Mums and filling the bellies of the children for the special Socktober lunch.
Thank you also to Mr Roods for the perfectly cooked sausages and of course to all our wonderful teachers for all their help. A huge amount of organising, but fun day for all!
